This statement was the welcome used by the 1st century church and is a reminder to us, that soon the Lord is coming. While meditating on these words, I thought about what do I want to be caught doing when Jesus returns? What would I do if I knew He would return tomorrow, next month, 6 months, a year from today? Would I be doing what I am doing today? Would I be tirelessly urging everyone I know to come to Christ? Would I have time to bathe, get a hair cut, eat?
While walking down that road of thought I was reminded about the importance of faithfully doing the mundane, to allow for the exploits to occur. Jesus during His short 3.5 year ministry healed, delivered, taught, preached and loved more than anyone in history. We see images of Him healing from morning to late the night. Teaching for days the multitudes. Managing the needs and crowds that wanted healing, attention and time. And yet, not only do we not see Him running to get His tasks done, but we see Him eating, sleeping, praying, resting. Doing the mundane. In the right time, and as needed.
This is comforting to me, as I program, study, fix bugs, adjust design, edit video. While doing the mundane in light of His soon return, but I am comforted in knowing that even this can be used by God. He used a smelly, old stick owned by a “over the hill” shepherd named Moses, and renamed it the Rod of God. He used some foxes with torches tied to their tails to bring judgement on the enemies of God. He used the sound of walking feet to scare armies into killing one another so His people would not starve. I guess He can use some HTML, Flash, and sweat for His Glory also.
We are here doing the mundane, broadcasting the Gospel around the World, in many languages.
